Browser game not loading?
Start with the symptom, not a blanket reset. These checks help separate a broken project link, a download problem, missing files and browser limitations. They cannot promise to repair every third-party game.
Before changing anything
Export or back up existing saves first. Use the game’s own export function if available and keep the export outside the browser. Confirm that you can find it before a reset. Never begin by choosing to clear site data: that can remove saves, settings and downloaded game data.
- Open the exact project entry from its directory page. A similarly named remake may use different files, controls or saves.
- Check the project’s maintenance notices and setup instructions. A visible launcher is not proof that every mode works.
- Record the exact error and where loading stops. Change only one thing at a time and keep the original setting.
- Stop at a certificate warning, unexpected login, unrelated download or redirected merchandise page. Do not bypass security warnings, disable browser security or install a “game repair” extension.
Identify the failure
- The address will not open
- Check spelling and the project’s official notices. Try an ordinary trusted connection if your current network is unreliable. Do not evade school or workplace network rules. If only this project fails, it may be an outage rather than a browser defect.
- The page opens but stays blank
- Confirm JavaScript is allowed for this trusted site. Update the browser when it is safe to restart. A private window can help compare extension or profile behaviour, but it has different storage and is not a permanent fix. Do not import an important save into a throwaway private session as your only copy.
- A loader moves slowly or stops
- Some ports download substantial data on first launch. Look for a stated size and actual progress, check free disk space, and wait while progress continues. A fixed percentage alone is not proof of success. Avoid repeated reloads that restart the download.
- A button works but a mode does not
- Check whether that mode needs your own files, a project account or a working multiplayer server. Do not treat a working demo as verification of the full commercial game.
If a private-window comparison works, return to your ordinary profile and review relevant extensions individually. Restore each extension or setting after the comparison; do not leave all protections switched off. See Chrome’s video and game troubleshooting, Firefox’s media troubleshooting, and Apple’s Safari guidance for the current browser-specific procedures. Safari guidance is an official further-reading link, not a procedure independently verified here.
Files and launchers
Own files required means legitimately obtained data from the correct game and supported version. This directory supplies no commercial game files. Read the launcher’s requested filenames and folder layout before importing; renaming an unrelated file does not make it compatible.
- Diablo: the demo and full-game path are different. Full-game setup asks for your own DIABDAT.MPQ; an MPQ from another title is not interchangeable.
- WebXash: built-in content and imported game-data folders are separate choices. Follow that launcher’s supported format rather than uploading arbitrary archives.
- Vice City and Halo CE Mobile: inspect the entry’s data-import instructions and supported edition before continuing.
- For ScummVM-based classics, select the correct game directory and required data files. A launcher page alone does not supply them.
Keep your original data unchanged. If an import fails, record the file format and project version—not the file contents—and consult the project’s own documentation.
Graphics and controls
A WebGL or WebGL2 error is a renderer capability problem, not necessarily a missing game file. Check the project’s stated browser requirements. Compare an up-to-date supported browser on the same device; if appropriate, record the current graphics-acceleration setting before following official browser guidance. Restore the baseline if the comparison does not help. Never download graphics drivers from a game-page pop-up.
For keyboard games, click the game canvas to give it focus and check that another field is not capturing keys. Some first-person games request pointer lock after a deliberate click. Use Escape to leave it, then click the game again to retry. Fullscreen, mouse capture and sound can need a user gesture; automatic playback may be blocked. MDN explains pointer lock and compatibility.
A desktop recommendation is not evidence that touch controls exist. Mobile or Mobile + Desktop reflects positive project documentation, not our physical-phone gameplay test. If a phone has no usable controls, choose a documented touch project instead of forcing a desktop-only game.
Protect saves
Browser storage belongs to an origin: its scheme, hostname and port matter. A save on one project domain may not appear on a mirror or another browser profile. Private browsing can remove stored data when that session ends. Disk pressure, browser eviction or storage restrictions can also affect persistence.
- Export the game’s save, copy it outside the browser, and confirm that the export exists. Do not share it publicly; it may include personal information.
- Check storage space and the game’s own import/export instructions. Keep the original export until a restore is confirmed.
- Only after backup, if official instructions recommend it, consider clearing data for the affected site—not all browsing data. Understand that this may delete saves and force a fresh download.
- Reopen the same origin, import through the game’s own control and confirm the expected progress. If it fails, keep your untouched backup and ask the project for help.
MDN’s storage quotas and eviction guide explains why browser storage is not a permanent backup. This directory’s Saved list is separate from each game’s progress; clearing this directory’s storage does not repair a third-party game.
Report a useful bug
Send the project maintainer the exact entry URL, browser and version, device/OS, time of failure, selected mode, last visible loading stage and a short repeatable sequence. Note which single comparison you tried and what changed. Include a screenshot or concise error text only after removing account names, private URLs and other personal details.
Do not attach commercial game files, passwords, session tokens, entire console dumps or private saves. For an incorrect directory link or note, use Contact & corrections; for the game itself, use its own official support or issue tracker.
